About Me

I am Katie Bryce and I study three dimensional design at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, focussing on ceramics, glass and jewellery.

At the start of this year I spent 5 months studying in a wee town in Finland named Hämeenlinna. Now I am back in Aberdeen working towards my final year's degree show.

Open Circle Project

The project encouraged me to take inspiration from the 4 partaking countries- Scotland, Germany, Finland and Italy- and then design a piece of narrative jewellery.

I decided to include fossils found in Germany and fir trees representing Finland in my design. I also wanted to find something to link all the countries, which is what led me to study the layers of the earth.

My ring is made from 4 pieces of metal fused together and then warped- a layer for each country.

I bent the metal to suggest a landscape and cast 4 silver fir trees which I then oxidized to compliment the colours of the fossil. I decided to position the fossil under all the layers- buried like it once was.
