I am Katie Bryce and I study three dimensional design at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, focussing on ceramics, glass and jewellery.

At the start of this year I spent 5 months studying in a wee town in Finland named Hämeenlinna. Now I am back in Aberdeen working towards my final year's degree show.

Living in a box

Little worry people living in a little box!

Silver hand-crafted box with hinged lid- home to the wee wire worry people.

Rocks!

'Where?' Exhibition- 3rd year uni project. Creating a piece based on a place that inspires me...

The Remarkable Rocks, Kangaroo Island, Australia VS Staffa and the Giants Causeway, Scotland and Ireland:

Hand built ceramic vases coloured with shoe polish (just because I am wild that way) and graphite.

Open Circle Project

The project encouraged me to take inspiration from the 4 partaking countries- Scotland, Germany, Finland and Italy- and then design a piece of narrative jewellery.

I decided to include fossils found in Germany and fir trees representing Finland in my design. I also wanted to find something to link all the countries, which is what led me to study the layers of the earth.

My ring is made from 4 pieces of metal fused together and then warped- a layer for each country.

I bent the metal to suggest a landscape and cast 4 silver fir trees which I then oxidized to compliment the colours of the fossil. I decided to position the fossil under all the layers- buried like it once was.

Fee Fi Fo Fum!

In 2009 I was given the opportunity to exhibit a piece of jewellery for an exhibition called 'The Darker Side of Fairy Tales'.

The story of Jack and the Beanstalk inspired my piece and I decided to focus on the sinister words 'Fee Fi Fo Fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman'.

I set cork scrabble letters within a silver frame and incorporated Jack's axe to again touch upon the darker side of the story. Finally I included the cow which was done for a couple of reasons- initially it symbolises the family's poverty, it is the last of their possessions and Jack throws it away for magical beans. On the other hand, the image of a cow is so harmless that against the rest of the piece, it provides a relief from the serious nature of the story.

This exhibition was held in Che Camille in Glasgow, 'a fashion clubhouse selling men and women's collections, accessories, fine and interactive art.' http://www.checamille.com/

Two steel bangles

After breaking my wrist by snowboarding in the ground (not advisable), I decided to use the body as inspiration for designing a piece of jewellery.

I inspected a variety of x-rays and noticed that the veins and blood vessels that creep around our bodies appear to map out patterns- natural designs.

I used round steel wire and formed it to make it twist and turn like the veins I looked at. I experimented with welding for the first time and connected the pieces by welding the joins using bass. I love the contrasting colours of the steel and brass as they flow together.

Anxiety

I've been studying in Finland for just over a month and I don't think I've ever been quite so productive within my life of education, nor have I enjoyed it so much!

One class I've just completed is Sculpture and Visual Expression. Over 4 weeks I made 4 clay sculptures of a life model before finishing with the task of visually creating a feeling in any way I fancied.

I used ink and watercolours set inside match boxes to communicate my feeling- anxiety. I love travelling, having fun and living life- however there's always an underlying (usually hidden) feeling of anxiousness.
